31st International Young Physicists’ Tournament
The 31st International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) was held in Beijing, China, on July 19 to 26. Teams from 32 countries took part in the competition called World Cup in Physics for its prestige and complexity. The Tournament resulted in the 23rd place in the standings for our country. The top four participants included the teams from Singapore, China, Korea, and Germany.
The International Organizing Committee (IOC) has been selecting 17 tasks and publishing them a year before the Tournament since 1992. These tasks cover different areas of physics and are often interdisciplinary. The objectives of the Tournament are formulated in an open form and allow different approaches to their solution. The purpose of such tasks is to put the participant in the same conditions as the real research physicists.
At the preparatory stage, participants carry out the necessary experiments, understand the theory, and possibly consult with experts. The ability to organize your time and teamwork skills play crucial role here. The preparation should result in the structured reports that are presented at the Tournament. Speakers must thoroughly understand the issue, as well as speak English at a level sufficient to discuss and defend their reports.
Belarus has been among the strongest participants of the Tournament since its foundation. We won 18 sets of medals in the Tournaments held between 1992 and 2017. The selection of the team representing Belarus at the Tournament is based on the results of the Republican competition. 13 teams took part in the 26th Republican Young Physicists’ Tournament in 2018. The team of BSU Lyceum lead by Artem Bury and Daniil Mnevets won the first place diploma. This team together with the students of BNTU Lyceum represented our country at the World Cup in China.
