Belarusian Pupils Win the ROBOTEX Championship

Thousands of engineers, executives, students, and robotics enthusiasts have been gathering in Tallinn at ROBOTEX for 18 years already to find the champion in the development of artificial intelligence and best robot designs, as well as to share achievements and experience.

Belarus sent a delegation of 49 to ROBOTEX 2019 held at the Estonian Fair Center from 29 November to 1 December that year. Our national team included pupils and teachers of robotics from different cities of Belarus for the first time in 4 years of Belarus participating in this championship. The participants were selected by the organizer of the trip, the Association “The Education for the Future”, on a competitive basis. The championship was also attended by 2 teachers and 8 students of the BNTU representing the Faculty of Information Technology and Robotics and the Faculty of Engineering.

The teams created 10 robots to participate in 5 categories, namely Robot Sumo, FolkRace, Line Following, Mini Sumo, and Girl’s Firefighting.

The educational program was an important component of the trip. It is at the events of such a level when an exchange of valuable experience takes place, together with acquaintance with cutting-edge educational methods and practices.

On its way to the competition, our delegation paid an educational visit to the Gymnasium of Preili (Latvia) known for its own robotics championship. Visits were also organized to several Tallinn schools, where students and teaching staff were able to get acquainted with the principles and methods of teaching robotics.

ROBOTEX offered an extensive educational program. Dozens of workshops and seminars opened their doors to the championship participants, allowing our teams to get acquainted with the latest developments in the field of robotics, technology, and business.

In conclusion, some words about the results. The Belarusian robots performed well in general. Our students got experience of participating in a major competition, while the victory of the Belarusian team was won by the pupils! Pavel Titov (the Axiom_Pavel team) took the third place in the Lego Line Following category for pre-teens under 13, while the Belarusian girls’ team shared third place with a team from India according to the results of the competitions in the Girl’s Firefighting category. Only girls could participate in that category and had to complete a rather original and romantic task: to construct a robot that should find the candles and blow them out
