9th International Tournament of Young Mathematicians (ITYM 2017)

The Tournament of Young Mathematicians is a team competition for pupils who compete in their ability to solve tricky mathematical tasks, present the results obtained in the most advantageous way, and defend their point of view with substantial arguments in a public discussion. A number of successive mathematical battles form the core of the tournament when the teams present their research work in predetermined topics and act as opponents or critics to other participants.

Teams from 8 countries applied for participation in ITYM 2017; following the results of pre-qualification, 7 teams from 4 countries were invited to participate, namely 2 teams from Belarus, Russia, and Romania each and a team from Georgia.

Traditionally, Belarus, Russia, and France are among the top three of the participants; teams from Germany, Bulgaria, and Romania are also considered to be strong. The small number of countries that take part in the Tournament results from the complexity of its tasks including those related to unresolved issues of contemporary Mathematics.

The performance of the Belarusian team this year surpassed the most daring expectations. The main team took the clear 1st place and won the well-deserved gold. The second team, representing the educational institutions of Minsk and Gomel, as well as the BSU Lyceum, took the 2nd place and won silver.

The main Belarusian team included:

  • Evgeny Zabrotsky, State Educational Institution “Soligorsk Gymnasium No. 3”, 11th class;
  • Vladislav Zverik, State Educational Institution “Minsk Gymnasium No. 20”, 9th class;
  • Pyotr Ignatenko, State Educational Institution “BSU Lyceum”, 10th class;
  • Vassily Umerenkov, State Educational Institution “BSU Lyceum”, 11th class;
  • Anatoly Shatilo, State Educational Institution “BSU Lyceum”, 10th class;
  • Nikolai Sheshko, State Educational Institution “Minsk Gymnasium No. 41”, 11th class.

The second team included:

  • Anna Belesheva, State Educational Institution “Minsk Gymnasium No. 1”, 11th class;
  • Varvara Drozdova, State Educational Institution “Gomel Gymnasium No. 51”, 11th class;
  • Alexander Kazakov, State Educational Institution “BSU Lyceum”, 10th class;
  • Yanina Sandrygailo, State Educational Institution “Gomel Gymnasium No. 56”, 10th class;
  • Anton Suravezhkin, State Educational Institution “Minsk Gymnasium No. 29”, 9th class;
  • Andrei Shakel, State Educational Institution “BSU Lyceum”, 10th class.

We congratulate the winners!

Belarusian teams have always taken high places and won medals at the Tournament. In total, our teams have won 11 medals: five gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals. This is the best result among all the countries participating in the International Tournament of Young Mathematicians.
